Biography
Giant Squid garnered the attention of eclectic, indie-metal label, THE END Records, with its self released, first album, Metridium Field, engineered by legendary veteran producer of heavy music, Billy Anderson (Neurosis, High On Fire, Mr. Bungle,Swans) and thus inked a deal in 2005. The band decided for its first release on The End Records, to completely re-record this debut album, again with Billy anderson at the helm, as well as Austin's Jason Rufuss Sewell on board as producer, in order to showcase the different approaches and attitudes of their current line up towards this ambitious material. This new incarnation - now labeled Metridium fields - will be cocooned in a beautiful new digi-pak, celebrating the original over art of Aurielle Gregory, and arrives in stores August 2006.
Giant Squid just recently finished a short, yet vast, East coast/Canadian tour with Holland's rock superstars, The Gathering, and Montreal's favorite traveling carnival of metal, Unexpect. Traveling over 6700 miles in less than two weeks, the band played to 400 - 700 capacity crowds at such legendary clubs as The Knitting Factory in NY, The Middle East in Boston, and Foufounes Electriques in Montreal. They are following up this East coast jaunt with an equally expansive West Coast tour, joining forces with the bizarre LA band, Stolen Babies, for a handfull of Texas and California dates, hitting such prestigous venues as Emo's in Austin, and Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco, before heading to the North West with label mates, Agalloch for shows in Oregon, Washington, and Vancouver.
Due to insanely high costs of living in their native town of Sacramento, CA and a lack of places to gig, the entire band relocated in January of 2006 to the live music capitol of the world, Austin, TX. From here Giant Squid hopes to further hone their craft in a city that readily supports the arts, and to be able to tour easily, reaching both coasts as well as mid-west states from Austin's central location. Their first gig in their new hometown was The End Records's showcase show at SXSW (Austins legendary, annual, week long music festival) on March 16th at The Lava Lounge, with label mates from all over the world, including Montreal's, Unexpect, Norway's Green Carnation, and Holland's The Gathering.
