'The General Lee, Lynard Skynard, moonshine, and hot rods. Welcome to the south…' This is the intro to Artimus Pyledriver's bio on it's website. Formed only four years ago in Atlanta Georgia from the remnants of other sludge, hardcore and doom metal projects by lead singer Dave slocum and guitarist Jimmy Hall, Artimus Pyledriver has no qualms about claiming it's influences proudly. In it's bio it also lists the 'twin blacks of hard music' Black Flag and Black Sabbath.
To make an Artimus Pyledriver , you would mix equal parts AC/DC and Black Sabbath, then add ice and a dash of Pantera. On Artimus Pyledriver's self titled full length album, don't look for deep introspective lyrical content, look for songs about drinking, driving, and well you know… Though there is no mention of AC/DC on Artimus Pyledriver's bio, Dave Slocum touts the Brain Johnson high pitched growl vocal style proudly, which is most evident on songs like 'Dixie Fight Song' with its slow bluesy verses that allow Slocum's voice to stand out. A song like 'High Life' harkens back to the grand era of stoner rock like Corrosion of Conformity and Clutch while still displaying the classic stoner/southern rock influences of Lynard Skynard. Songs like 'Get some' have a distinct, sludgy, Black Sabbath meets Pantera groove. The lead guitars especially remind me of the late Darrel Abbot's more bluesy moments. The song structures on this album are all pretty much the basic verse, chorus, verse with the occasional guitar solo. This reminds the listener of the glam/hard rock era of the late 1980's (think Motley Crue/ early Guns N' Roses) when rock n' roll was just that, rock n' roll, with none of the operatic bridges and instrumental interludes that are becoming so popular today thanks to the growing popularity of progressive/black metal.
For the metal fan that likes their music straight up with no chaser this is the perfect band to listen to. Artimus Pyledriver have managed to make basic, sludgy rock n' roll that is not monotonous as some of the hard rock of the early 1990's became when grudge took over and glam began to fade out. Even bands like AC/DC have had it's repetitive, monotonous moment later in their career and Artimus Pyledriver steers away from this into a wild ride of girls, guitars, and booze.
