Alternative, Hardcore, Rock, nu-metal, math metal, progressive: all these terms could be used to describe Forfeit, a band out of Wilmington, Delaware. As yet unsigned according to its website, Forfeit has self-released its first album 'Prelude to a Long Winter'. Well produced and mixed by Arik Victor at Creep Records in Pennsylvania, 'Prelude to a Long Winter' is an intriguing listen to say the least.
Pin-pointing one band that Forfeit resembles on the album 'Prelude to a Long Winter' would be virtually impossible. Songs like 'Mess', for example, have parts that are very listenable, almost catchy melodic rock and then parts that are chaotic yet mathematical heavy metal. It's jarring to hear such a different influence in one song but it works. Songs like 'Chasing me Away', on the other hand, seem to actually blend this metal chaos and catchy rock together into what one might dare to refer to as nu-metal that is actually quite good. The chunky bass lines might remind the listener of Korn as well as the melodic and then screaming vocals. Throw in the occasional spacey guitar interludes and Forfeit officially becomes hard to classify. Though they have a very modern sound, they carry on the influence of classics like Pink Floyd, not to mention the torch carries of this style like Opeth. The album surprises the listener to the end with the introspective folk ballad 'Shades of Goodbye' as the albums closer. The song is almost like a hidden track with over one whole minuet of church bells ringing over pouring rain at its beginning.
While listening to 'Prelude to a Long Winter', any attempt to classify it brings the listener to the conclusion that Forfeit is a band that that creates a form of music all its own. Diversity and creativity in music should be encouraged rather than formulas that will sell. Forfeit is a band that makes its own way and this should be supported.
