'Not My Year' sees the resurfacing of former Kittie bassist Jennifer Arroyo as she joins forces with the prolific Billy Graziadei (Biohazard) in a quintet that certainly thrashes much harder than Kittie ever did, to say the least.
Suicide City is doubtlessly aggressive in their stomping delivery and the out-of-control vocals of Karl Bernhotlz walk the line between the full on aggression of Slipknot's Corey Taylor and the tuneful singing ability of The Offspring's Dexter Holland. The band nails some suitably catchy choruses that are a nice compliment to the blunter and devastating verse sections.
'Give Me Your Pity' is really a standout track, showing that Suicide City are the real thing, melding harmony and strength into a potent combination. There's more than enough original sounding ideas on this record to indicate that Suicide City have the potential to surpass the appeal of Kittie, especially amongst those who are not affronted by the melding of extreme metal with melody.
Each of these five tracks remains equally distinct and memorable, with 'Undone' sounding like Faith No More on steroids and closer 'Diemonds' breaking out a hardcore introduction to a deliberate onslaught of power grooving madness not altogether distant from Graziadei's Biohazard. Watch for this group to break wide open in terms of popularity in the not-too-distant future on the basis of the buzz from this initial taste alone.
