If you've bought this one already, you're must feel like you just bought a quarter ounce of oregano. Seriously, Index Case are a mash-up of Eminem and Slipknot on the leadoff track to this album. Put Marshall Mathers in a mask and the result would sound much like 'Listen.' Yes, these guys are a touch meaner than Linkin Park at times, but in contrast, their songwriting skills are quite leaner. Maybe these cats could stand to get a bit more Phat, but there isn't much promise of the potential of that occurring on this overly tepid effort.
Despite its tough talk, 'Deserver' comes off as limp-bizkit-wristed, sounding like an f-bomb dropping Fred Durst-with-a-testicular-removal procedure, minor league pretender. Index Case aren't doing anything original enough here that hasn't already been thought of by a hundred other trend-loving scenester outfits, and songs like 'The L' have all the potency of Nyquil.
More cynical listeners just aren't going to buy this tired shtick and oftentimes, it sounds as if this band won't even stay awake themselves to finish the song. All in all, a half-hearted offering that will leave you feeling like you need to take a nap. Grab a teddy bear so you can share the sadness, Index Case being ample bait for tempting the sandman.
